Welcome to The 10 Week Worship Guitar blog.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

As well as my recent resurrection of my YouTube channel<\/a>, on which I\u2019ve now begun sharing a weekly worship guitar focused workshop called \u2018Worship Workshop Wednesday\u2019, I\u2019ve also decided to resume blogging here on my website. All of this stems from my \u2018why\u2019, and the reason I decided to teach worship guitar in the first place.<\/p>\n

Over the next few weeks, here on the blog, I\u2019ll be sharing more about why I teach<\/em> worship guitar, as opposed to just playing it<\/strong> (which you might expect from someone who\u2019s been a professional musician for over 30 years!)<\/p>\n

Why I Teach Guitar: Part One<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A while ago I received this comment from a student:<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely loved learning all the great songs of worship \u2013 great for my own faith \u2013 my own daily worship\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Music is a never-ending journey \u2013 I figure that\u2019s what draws us on deeper in to it. The phenomenal jazz guitarist Mike Stern says \u201c<\/em>I\u2019m still plugging away and trying to push whatever potential I have. But it always seems like the more I know the less I know\u201d<\/em>. (Guitar Player, March 2000, p. 36). If he says that, we (guitarists) are all likely to feel the same.<\/p>\n

I went brainstorming. I started with the word \u201cmusic\u201d in the centre of the page, because that seems to be the cornerstone, and dived in.<\/p>\n

From the word \u201cmusic<\/strong>\u201d I spontaneously wrote five other words radiating from it; I came up with mystery; emotions; moving; sublime and (of course) guitar.<\/p>\n

From each of those five I spontaneously wrote five more words\/terms:<\/p>\n

Mystery:<\/strong> enigma; mystique; puzzle; secret; riddle.<\/p>\n

Emotions:<\/strong> the heart; sentiment; reaction; passion; gut-feeling.<\/p>\n

Moving:<\/strong> affecting; touching; poignant; inspiring; emotional.<\/p>\n

Sublime:<\/strong> out of this world; divine; fantastic; majestic; awe inspiring \u2013 This made me think of J.S. Bach.<\/p>\n

Guitar:<\/strong> instrument; expression; twang; six-strings and the truth.<\/p>\n

That lead me on to a train of thought that included \u201850s rockabilly, \u201860s Beatles mop-tops and suits, 70s disco\u2026<\/p>\n

All of these seem to be facets of what I would aspire to.<\/p>\n

When I left school I studied sculpture at art-college but dropped out, as many have, to pursue a passion for music. I travelled the world playing the guitar; Europe; Bermuda; The USA, Australia\u2026 I then began to feel that I ought to \u201cknow\u201d something about music. I took a grade 8 music theory exam, which led to a music A level, which led to a B. Mus. degree, which led to an M.A in ethnomusicology, which led to a Ph.D. \u201cMelodic Improvisation on a Twelve-Bar Blues Model: An Investigation of Physical and Historical Aspects, and Their Contribution to Performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of my driving passions is to uncover the secrets of music \u2013 a never-ending quest.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I recently read that an eminent guitarist was told when he was young that he would have the desire to teach in later life. He didn\u2019t believe it. But he found that it was true\u2026<\/p>\n

I too found this to be true for me too.<\/p>\n
